From being exposed to amazing clubland artists in 1980’s London, I became aware of the power of dressing up and fantasy. I was fascinated by how an eyelash or hairstyle can turn a switch on for an actor...and I enjoy being apart of that transformation.

l begun working in music videos and on student films. My first big designing job was for the  Napoleonic TV series Sharpe with Sean Bean, a huge learning curve as it was also my first experience of historic drama. Filming in Russia in the 90’s, I learnt to improvise as very little product was available, and learnt a lot about crowd scenes when shooting huge, quite dangerous battles with none of the health and safety protocols of now.

I have been lucky to have been able to collaborate with many talented people in front and behind the camera and on a very varied body of work including winning a craft team BAFTA for the Sound of Music filmed live for ITV, and being nominated for a BIFA on psycho horror Saint Maud directed by Rose Glass. Working on period mini series Harlots with Samantha Morton and Leslie Manville, to Derek Jacobi’s immersion into the world of Francis Bacon for which he won a BAFTA, in the film Love Is The Devil alongside Tilda Swinton and Daniel Craig. More recently The Buccaneers with it’s glorious young cast, where the story arcs and world call for a constantly shifting design. As well as supporting actors on their journey, part of my joy comes from conducting the skills my team bring. Whether that be with only 3 of us such as on She Will directed by Artist Charlotte Colbert or up to 40 team members on The Serpent Queen with Samantha Morton.

I have time travelled from the 16th C and the court of Catherine Medici through Napoleonic France, to the seedier world of Georgian London, the Victorian world of The Buccaneers and into the 20th century from the stylish 50’s of Little Birds with Juno Temple and Yumna Marwan. The 80’s in Save the Cinema (for which I was nominated for a makeup Bafta Cymru) war torn Afghanistan in Kajaki up to Catastrophe‘s modern day suburbia and beyond.

Whether I am working for film or TV in whatever time, my job and pleasure is still, in enabling the transformation of an actor, by collaborating  with directors, cinematographers, costume designers and writers to find relatable authentic designs that support the story, fit into the constantly changing worlds we are creating, and are interesting to watch.
